customisable cannon overhaul

#1
Im considering a change to the cannons to make them more versatile.

Firstly make separate cannon ammo storage where you can customise the shell totally (like the missiles)

Then have the deck guns connecting into the type of ammunition they want to use

Turrets will need ammo and gun, for the time being

for the customisation of the shells im thinking:

Fuzes:
Airburst time
airusrt range
impact (hesh and heat)
Hardened (bunker buster)

Warheads
explosive
fragments
depleted uranium (for armour piercing)

Copper head (shaped charge HEAT to achieve armour pierce)
Squash head (HESH type damage, spalling, impact damage)
Dart head (kinetic energy armour pierce)

Extra:
powder (for firing the shell faster)
Fins (accuracy)

So the cannon would just link up to the ammo box (which would be very large to hold large amounts of complex shells) and the user would be able to swap begween ammo types from any connected ammo boxes.

there would then be a number of new cannon blocks added like firing rate increasers and shock absorbers (also maintaining the gauge increase blocks) and multiple barrel attachments.

Thoughts?

Sounds interesting the versatile possibilities.
That would make creations much more vary and interesting.
New tactics to apply, etc.

But:
1. Would standard (current) ammo box stay as it is, or this will be directly required to develop own shells, similar as rockets? I am ok with anything more complex, more fun. But I just think about default config, for people who don't want to play with gun configuration too much.

2. Regarding ammo racks. Does it means that they could be accessible somewhere on the board of the vehicle, reducing same way the size of the gun?

Otherwise than that, sound interesting for me Wink

depleted uranium (for armour piercing)

You're going to kill the crew from radiation!!

Nick i would change a few things, fins are USELESS whit anything else then APCR ( you call it dart head, but the real name is APCR: armor piercing composite ridge).
For more accuracy you just need longer barrels.

As for heat ammo, it just 'spews' hot liquid metal insinde the armor on inpact making a small hole whit freat penetration (extreme heat will cause fire if it touches wood), penetration for HEAT is more then 1,5m againts WW2 tank plating.

HESH is just a HE grenade that will nullify any angels up until 70~85° and the shok of the explosion wil tarvers and cause spall inside the vehicle (just like you described it)

Please note 2 things:
- DEPLETED uranium doesn't have that much radiation
- the crew are robot Tongue

Anty there will be a default shell in each newly placed ammo box so you wont be fored to customise. Yes you can access ammo from anywhere (although you need to physically connect gun to ammo), reducing the size of the gun itself and adding a bit more infrastructure to the vehicle

Would that mean running a new type of block "ammo train" from the magazine (hidden below, containing ammo blocks) up to (within 2 blocks of) the turret base? Just like the weapon controller?

I would hope the auto loaders and all stay on the turret to force the larger ones to require the larger structure up there, but I love the idea of hidden mags and custom ammo!

So basically gun and turret above deck, and magazine and ammo below deck? Like real naval guns?? Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin If so, that would make gun turrets less massive while keeping the ship filled, like you said.[Image: 16in_Gun_Turret.jpg]

If there are different kinds of ammunition to choose from, how will the AI decide which one to use? Can we specify the situation the ammo is used for (for example set specific heights at which they should be fired at for specialised AA-ammo).

Yeay! Exactly what I wanted. And maybe like Joe said you could make a "cannon turret" block that act like a 6 way connector so we could put ammo box inside the ship

Yeah It's going to have cool new turrets to allow the ammo trains to reach big turreted guns! And yes there will still be lots of stuff on the larger guns so they won't shrink completely. Fleshed out the ideas today and I think it's going to be amazing Big Grin

Only downside is I think it'll be about two or three solid weeks of work to get it all working (shell parts, new cannon parts, custom ammo parts (which contain the shell parts) new turret designs and a bunch of new GUIs)
