APS demo branch

#1
Can't make a table of contents so wall of text incoming. Changes shouldn't break anything too hard, existing things keep working just won't be optimal.
Numbers are subject to change.

Plain english overview:
  • All shell types are useful
  • Low caliber APS has more firepower/volume, high caliber more firepower/materials. Both differences are ~20% tops, both extremes are useful now(small: much lower overkill/variance, big: better pen)
  • Damage is cut across the board, this also affects missiles. APS is much more expensive, for similar sized vehicles armor might hold up for a minute or 2 and active defenses are a much bigger opportunity cost.
  • Planar shields nerfed/made more consistent, also easier to place
  • Barrel lengths needed for accuracy decreased
  • APS has roughly 2x the volume/1.25x the firepower of a missile system with the same cost
  • APS is the generalist weapon, it is very resistant to LAMS. Shooting for LAMS being practical against non-kinetic missiles and expensive CRAMs with lots of connections/few hardeners
  • Base missile durability and LAMS storage volume reduced, missile bodies got their 200% buff back(from 150%)
  • Railguns without gunpowder are now practical: effort of reaching a certain speed with rails only is comparable to gunpowder guns. Railguns are more expensive to build, but compact and cheaper to run
  • Shells are faster

Caliber/payload scaling
  • Scaling is now MODULE_VOLUME^0.6 (was 0.65). Means small shells fire relatively slower than before, and do more damage/shot. Twice the caliber means ~3.5x damage and ~0.29x rate of fire
  • Speed and accuracy penalties for small shells removed. Same shells have the same speed/AP for all sizes and damage*rate of fire is constant. This is modified a bit later, see the "Loaders" section.
  • Adding more warheads is a linear damage increase for all shells. 2 HE bodies now means 2x HE/HEAT/HESH damage compared to one, same for EMP and flak
  • Frag damage reduced to match the missile HE-frag damage ratio. Total frag damage is proportional to MODULE_VOLUME^0.6
  • LENGTH_IN_FULL_MODULES is how many full modules a shell has. It's 3 for a HE/HE/inertial fuse 200mm, 2.4 for the same at 500mm: (500+500+200) / 500
  • VOLUME_MODIFIER is (VOLUME_OF_A_SINGLE_MODULE / VOLUME_OF_A_SINGLE_500mm_MODULE) ^ 0.6

Kinetic
  • Kinetics rescaled, they do much less damage with a lot higher AP. References at 500mm, with 5 GP/body/body/head:
    - AP head roughly 15.3K damage, 30 AP, 773 m/s. Best raw damage, but slower and weaker against highish AC (at least 2m metal, HA, applique)
    - Composite head 10.2K damage, 59 AP, 853 m/s. Higher speed and potential, more likely to waste AP.
    - Sabot head 7.7K damage, 99 AP, 853 m/s. Highest kinetic power, but very prone to AP overkill and nerfs warheads.
    - Hollow point head 13.9K damage, 14.9 AP, 773 m/s. AP now works like on the other kinetics, so railguns with HP aren't wasting most of their power
  • Solid/sabot now have the same speed modifier. Sabots are more powerful when adjusted for AP but they have less kinetic damage so they are weaker when the AP is wasred.
  • AP capped head renamed to Heavy head, so there is no confusion from it actually having the lowest AP of the kinetics
Kinetics are still very good against strong armor, but are prone to overkill/get bad angles.
That means HE/frag/... should be generally stronger, unless you are shooting at super hard targets. Goal is to balance out kinetic having better hitrates from high speed.

Frag changes
  • APS shells and missiles now merge their frag warheads to get a summed nominal frag damage (so they work the same as HE/EMP/flak)
  • Frag counts are a function of this total frag damage. FRAG_COUNT = TOTAL_DAMAGE^0.25, rounded down to the nearest integer
  • Frag damage is TOTAL_DAMAGE / FRAG_COUNT
  • Example frag counts:
    - ~2-5 for 18mm APS
    - ~15-30 for 500mm APS/M missiles
    - ~30-50 for L missiles
  • Frag spawn position rules are the same as HE for both missiles/APS
  • Frag cone angle and offset angle is the average of warheads
  • Frag default cone angle back to 60°
  • Frag cone angle damage modifier changed to (2.5+ANGLE^0.5) / 16, reference moved to 180° for easier calculations

HESH
  • Now spalls in a single line perpendicular to the surface hit, base metric increased. Picture to demonstrate: https://i.imgur.com/vgbZ9s7.jpg
  • Does ~1/4 of its firepower in thump damage, so it's never completely useless
  • Thump AP increased to 20, so it isn't disproportionately strong against softer things
  • Now also spawns frags on leaving the first structural component, like HEAT
  • If it hits a non-structural component frags will have 6 AP for the purpose of determining how much metric is used up to destroy it
  • If it hits a non-structural component and destroys it the remaining frags will have the AP of 2x the destroyed block's armor
  • Metric is now a raw frag damage number, 80% of what a 60° frag warhead does
  • Final fragment damage is METRIC / MAX(3, SQRT(ARMOR_SUM)). This means max HESH damage is 1/3 of a frag warhead, ~18% against 2m metal and ~16% after 1m HA
  • Fragment count is the same as for frag warheads: FRAG_COUNT = TOTAL_DAMAGE^0.25, FRAG_DAMAGE = TOTAL_DAMAGE / FRAG_COUNT
With minimum 3 metric on armor HESH now won't nuke entire ships on hitting the thin end of a 4m slope.
It is also much more reliable now, especially against designs without lots of protruding decorations.

HEAT
  • Shaped charge missile head added. As fast as thumper head, same health as fins/fuel, fully uses the HE warheads directly behind it
  • HESH and aps/missile HEAT heads now all count as a full HE warhead with 80% special factor
  • Now also uses frag warheads as baseline, does 20%-~28% the nominal damage of frags at max-min pen
  • Pen factor only reduces raw damage to 1 / SQRT(PEN_FACTOR), instead of 1 / PEN_FACTOR

HE/flak
  • APS HE now uses the same radius as missiles, from (DAMAGE/10)^0.5 to DAMAGE^0.3.
  • Flak radius is radius of same HE damage * 3
  • Missile HE radius changed from DAMAGE^0.34 to DAMAGE^0.3
  • Base HE damage on APS and missiles go through a function to make small explosions stronger/big ones weaker
  • FINAL_HE_DAMAGE = 3000*((BASE_HE_DAMAGE/3000)^0.8)
  • Radius is based on the final damage
  • An S missile with 1 HE warhead will do ~273 damage, instead of 150
  • A 500mm APS shell with 4 HE warheads will do ~9094 damage, instead of 12000
Done to account for radius increase/threshold mechanics making 1000 damage more than twice as strong as 500.
All firepowers are calculated based on the pre-transform values.
Missile HE radius slightly reduced.
HE threshold/mechanics are untouched for now.

Clip explosions
  • Clip/autoloader tooltips show the explosive/frag/EMP damage they do if they blow up
  • Clip explosions now also merge their HE/flak/propellant damage
  • Clip explosion radius is TOTAL_EXPLOSIVE_DAMAGE^0.3
  • HE counts at 1/4 damage, flak at 1/2, each ~4 propellants is the same as 1 HE

Shell modifiers
  • The module in the first slot determines the base AP/kinetic/speed modifier of the shell
  • Modules behind the first slot get the average of their modifier, weighted by their length
  • Final modifiers are HEAD_BASE * MODULE_AVERAGE
  • If the shell isn't at least 3 components long speed modifier will be treated as if it was filled up to that length with a 0.7 speed component
  • Heads are sorted into 3 categories based on speed: fast, medium, slow. Fast are sabot, composite, shaped charge, disruptor. Medium are AP, squash, skimmer. Slow all other heads
  • Non-head components almost all have 1 kinetic damage modifier, they change AP instead
  • Non-head components are sorted into 3 main categories: sabot, average, soft. Sabot has 1.4 AP modifier, average 1, soft 0.2. Soft are HE/frag/EMP/flak
  • HE/frag/flak/emp/disruptor/HEAT/HESH heads got a fragile head HP category, their health modifier is 0.8 (was 1)
  • Soft components also have a 0.5 health modifier
  • Solid bodies have 1.1 speed modifier
  • Fuse max length down from 200mm to 100mm. Fuses are average components for AP calculations
  • HP increased to 5-10x the old values, depends on body count
  • Shorter shell components now cost proportionally less ammo
  • Base bleeder has 1 modifiers all around. It increases final speed modifier by 10% and inaccuracy modifier by 25%
  • Base bleeder has 1 modifiers all around. It increases final speed modifier by 10% and inaccuracy modifier by 25%
APHE should be useful against a wider range of targets, you can still get through 1-2 metals but more armor can hold up very well against the HE body AP cut.
Baseline 1 on most modules and stats should also make things much simpler to calculate.

Loaders
  • Autoloader complexity modifier removed. Barrels come with builtin cooling and recoil reduction so there is no hard optimum, it's a choice between more guns(redundancy/salvos) or bigger ones(fewer surface components).
  • Autoloader length modifier removed
  • Autoloader clips don't have to have shells to provide the loading speed bonus
  • The 3 changes above mean that you always need 1 intake for every loader or clip for max firerate
  • Autoloader clip modifier is now: 2 / (1 + UNIQUE_CLIP_DIRECTIONS). At same length all configs have the same reload rate
  • Using more clips is cheaper, makes ejection easier and ammo supply can be lower. Loaders are more expensive and sensitive to losing ammo boxes, but less volatile.
  • Intakes attached directly to the firing piece take twice as much time to reload
  • Smaller shells have a VOLUME_MODIFIER^0.15 reload rate cut, to compensate for shorter loaders having much higher intake ratios. Shorter loaders still pack slightly more firepower/volume, for lower material efficiency
  • Loader and intake times are now the same, loading times increased
  • Loading time scaling: VOLUME_MODIFIER * (2 + LENGTH_IN_FULL_MODULES). This very short shells and pencils are a bit less efficient.
  • Gunpowder/rail casings only cost half as much ammo as other full-length parts, and only count as half length for reload times
Casing cost should slightly push average APS speed up, CRAM has the other end covered.
Goal is to make APS the midline weapon with reliable(ish Smile ) damage across targets, CRAMs the anti-slow specialists.

Beltfeeders
  • They show the length of their firing/reloading cycle and % uptime in their tooltip
  • APS tooltip now shows separate burst/sustained firerates and ammo costs when it has beltfeeders
  • 6 sec waiting time after loading removed
  • Beltfeeders give their loading speed bonus to attached intakes
  • Their burst firepower is ~50% higher than 1m autoloader with 125mm. Their sustained firepower is ~50% of burst with 1 intake, ~66% with 2, ...
  • Their multiplier now scales with the diameter of the loaded shell: (DIAMETER_MM / 2000)^0.4
  • Reference multipliers for 18/30/60/125/250/500mm: 15.2%, 18.6%, 24.6%, 33%, 43.5%, 57.4%
  • Beltfeeder cost up to 400 materials
Follows the trend of lower calibers being more compact and more expensive/firepower.

Kinetic energy
  • Gunpowder and rails use a kinetic energy system: a single 500mm gunpowder module gives 2000 kinetic energy, 1 rail charge gives 1
  • 1 kinetic energy is 1 recoil
  • Shell speed is roughly SQRT(KINETIC_ENERGY / LENGTH_IN_FULL_MODULES), before volume scaling and shell speed modifier from different parts
  • Using more bodies with the same amount of kinetic energy increases kinetic damage/decreases AP
Results are almost the same as current shells, with a slightly higher floor and no recoil quirks at <3 modules.
Things should be much simpler to read/calculate.

Rails
  • Every shell has a maximum energy it can take from rails without being destroyed. This scales with VOLUME_MODIFIER and LENGTH_IN_FULL_MODULES
  • Rail casings increase the maximum usable rail energy without adding mass to the shell. At max draw shells reach ~1000-1500 m/s without rail casings
  • At 500mm a single full length module can take 10000 rail charge
  • Maximum rail draw is now a fixed number, instead of total battery energy %. Final rail draw is the minimum of this value and the shell's maximum possible energy
  • Magnet attaching fixtures and barrel magnets now provide 10000/5000 maximum rail capacity. Only fixtures having at least 1 magnet count
  • Rail charger overclock setting removed
  • Rail chargers now recharge 200 energy/second
This means rails are usable without GP, and without any casings.
Since they can use shorter loaders and ignore cooling they are much more compact, and are cheap to run(assuming ammo isn't free).
They are more expensive than normal guns in return for being very volume-efficient.

Accuracy
  • Barrel length requirement now ignores casings. Barrel length required to reach 0.3 inaccuracy: SHELL_LENGTH ^ 0.75 * 4
  • Inaccuracy is: 0.3° * (BARREL_LENGTH / LENGTH_FOR_0.3) ^ 0.4. This means base accuracy is ~doubled, and barrel lengths matter much less
  • Using multiple barrels increases inaccuracy by 20/25/30/35/40%
  • Rails triple the shell's accuracy at the maximum possible draw(without casings). Scaling is linear, small charges are much weaker than before
  • Tracer's maximum accuracy bonus is 50%
Accuracy is improved accross the board.
Multiple barrels are mostly a sidegrade, they are a decent damage boost/cost reduction(a gauge increase is cheaper than a cooler) on small guns.
Also give the option to easily increase spread a bit for AA.

Recoil
  • Barrels give enough recoil reduction capacity to fire a 5 GP shell at their caliber
  • Barrels recharge enough recoil reduction to sustain ~2 intakes with 5 GP shells at 0 recoil
  • Shots with recoil over 0 have increased inaccuracy. The penalty is having 2x base inaccuracy with completely unmitigated 5 GP shells
  • Even without absorbers most things will have lower inaccuracy than before
  • Recoil absorbers give 1000 capacity and 150 recharge/sec for each meter of length
  • In general 1m absorber mitigates recoil from 2 loader volume for 5 GP shells
  • The force recoil from a given shell exerts on vehicles is cut to ~55%
  • Mitigated recoil doesn't add inaccuracy, but still exerts 25% the physical force on the vehicle

Cooling
  • Barrels have enough base cooling to sustain ~2 intakes with 5 gunpowder casing shells each
  • Using multiple barrels increases base cooling time of each barrel. COOLDOWN = BASE_COOLDOWN * (1 + 0.2 * (BARREL_COUNT - 1)), so 6 barrels give only 3x total rate of fire
  • Gauge coolers give a 50% additive bonus to cooling rate(each one can support 1 intake)
  • Cooler bonus % is reduced with multiple barrels. Additional coolears are a linear RoF increase no matter how many barrels you use
  • Cooler bonus % is reduced with higher calibers. Again, coolers are a linear increase and you need ~1 cooler for each 2 loader volume for 5 GP shells
  • Overclock setting removed
Linear cooling means guns lost the flat cooler tax, tiny ones are much more practical.

Pendepth fuse
  • Pendepth fuse time after first surface slider now has 3 decimals
  • Pendepth fuse defaults are 5m depth, 0.01s time after first surface

Shields
  • Shield reflection chance now does not depend on projectile speed
  • Base reflection chance between 0-90° impact angle is 20-40% for STR 10, 5-10% for STR 1
  • Shield stacking limitations removed
  • Max shield distance down to 15m
  • Projectiles roll a shield penetration value on being fired and use that for all shields(stacking only matters for different angles/strengths)
  • Disrupt shield mode removed
Shields are a minor boost now, and do not penalize fast/contact shells.
~30% average reflection is still a very noticeable durability boost if left unchecked.

Disruptor shells
  • Disruptor head reduces all payloads in the shell to 50%
  • Disruptor-tipped shells now pass through all shields, and cut their strength to X% of current value. Debuffed strength is tracked separately, doesn't reduce power cost. See shield tooltip for current status
  • Shields hit by disruptors regain their strength over time. Recharge rate is proportional to SQRT(POWER_COST), so big/distant shields recover faster(~10 seconds for medium distances)
  • Disruptor effect strength depends on the EMP payload of the shell(right now 2000 EMP reduces strength to 0%)
  • Disruptor head now counts as an EMP warhead (750 EMP damage at 500mm, the 50% reduction also affects the head)
All disruptors do something and EMP defense is slightly more important.
You do give up firepower to nerf shields so you should never use more than something like 1/6 your guns for disruption.

Cost adjustments
  • Autoloader costs up from 20 materials/block to 200/250/275/300/350/400 for 1/2/3/4/6/8m
  • Clip costs up from 5 materials/block to 120/150/165/180/210/240 for 1/2/3/4/6/8m
  • Recoil absorber cost up from 10/m to 80/m
  • Beltfed loader cost up from 35 to 400
  • Railgun charger cost up from 15 to 400
  • Railgun magnet attachment fixture cost up from 15 to 50
  • Railgun barrel magnet cost up from 15 to 50
  • Firing piece cost from 30 to 100
  • Ammo input feeder cost up from 15 to 50
  • Gauge cooler cost up from 20 to 50
  • Gauge splitter cost up from 15 to 50
  • Gauge increase cost up from 15 to 20
  • Shield projector cost down from 300 to 200
  • Heavy barrel weight down to 50%
  • Stone material cost from 2 to 3

Block connections
  • Railgun chargers can now connect to each other (back-front)
  • The back of a firing piece can now connect to autoloaders
  • The sides of gauge increase splitters can now connect to autoloaders
  • Gauge splitters now work as coolers, and can accept the same connections
  • 6-way connectors can now attach to recoil absorbers

Lasers
  • LAMS node cost down from 200 to 100
  • Laser cavity energy back from 100/400/4000 to 150/600/6000
  • Lasers cavities now spawn with up to 30 seconds worth of pump energy
Reducing LAMS volume a bit, and making overhead smaller for small things.
Patched up minor exploit with all storage and very high AP, should be even less practical now

Missiles
  • L missile 50% HP bonus removed
  • Missile HP reduced by 25%
  • Missile body/thumper HP modifier back from 150% to 200%
  • Missile damage cut to 50% the previous value
  • CIWS damage multiplier up from 8 to 20
  • Signal jammer maximum error added to remote guidance reduced from 15m to 10m
  • Prelock thrust now can't reduce thrust below 50% of the minimum setting for the propulsion component
  • Missile thump damage up by 25%, now 200 thump at 20 AP is equal to 150 HE for firepower calculations
Back towards bodies being more important for durability, and another LAMS volume reduction.
Makes LAMS-only defense simpler against missile not packing extra HP.

UI
  • All craft got a firepower breakdown in their 'V' menu. For now it only includes missiles, APS, CRAMs and lasers. 400 laser DPS with 50 AP = 1 firepower, first guess.
  • CRAMs got firepower, shell power and expected damage breakdown for minimum reload time
  • Laser combiners got a firepower estimate of their multipurpose laser in their tooltip
  • Railgun stat panel now has recoil/s, rail charge/s and RPM for reference
  • Ammo customizer got RPM per intake and ammo/sec per intake displays
  • Lots of other improvements
  • Firing pieces now show the full tooltip as long as there is at least 1 shell in any loaders/clips, not only when there is a shell ready to fire
  • The V menu of every craft now shows how much it spent on armor, both as absolute cost and percentage of total cost(without subvehicles)
  • Structural blocks, applique and surge protectors count as armor for this display

Aimpoint
  • The option to target AI mainframes and ammo was removed from the aimpoint selection card
Aimpoint has been a newbie trap forever, targeting mainframes/ammo means good designs laugh your attacks off.
At the same time it was disproportionately good against slow, weaker craft without redundancy.
