Proposal for campaign changes

#58
I would like to clarify something: While I want to see easy grade DWG and OW craft downgraded, I have zero issue with, and fully support the upgrading of the higher tier factions and difficulties. The SS and GT factions should absolutely be able to rip apart a starting player's best designs. In addition, advancing to the later stages of the campaign or adventure mode *should* require a comprehensive knowledge of the most current meta mechanics.

I have ships that have minimal problems ripping even late-game opponents several new you-know-whats. My concern remains the new player's ability to take on the earlier opponents without becoming overly frustrated or discouraged. It is for this reason that I keep some of my earlier ships around. While they are not optimized to be competitve and current, they were built to be sufficiently capable of taking on the first tiers of DWG and OW at the time. Currently, those ships get crushed more often than not when I test them against the updated DWG and OW easy and normal tiers.

The relevance of this is that these ships were built without a knowledge of FtD metas of even that time. They *were* built with some knowledge of real-life naval warfare metas. Most used armour and weapon layouts that were effective against the in-game craft at the time they were created. This is why I still use them for testing purposes. This is what starting players are likely to produce. They are still the product of enough hours having gone by that Steam will no longer issue a refund. A player deleting the game and requesting a refund might earn you an unfavourable review. Being denied a refund almost certainly earns a scathing review on Steam. All games generally want to aim for the holy grail of "easy to learn, hard to master." FtD stands at hard to learn and impossible to master.

Many new players need to be coddled a bit. As a GM for tabletop RPGs, I have to design my games to carefully balance the risk-effort-reward formula, especially for new players early in the campaign. It's a tricky balance. What seems easy for one player might seem insurmountable to another. As both tabletop RPGs and FtD are both heavily niche games, we both face the challenge of attracting and holding on to new players. New players generally need the following to feel like their time is well-spent:

1. A few early victories. Paying your dues comes later. While such early victories may seem easy to we established and experienced players, they will feel hard-earned to new players.

2. Logic and real-life common sense need to reasonably translate. Your mileage may vary on this one. It's more a case of obviousness. Is it reasonably obvious what the player needs to do next? For FtD as it stands at present, obviousness is a significant issue.

3. Can I create what I want to create without having to contort it too much to satisfy the game? In all cases, there are necessary compromises to get your concept to work. But it is up to the game designer to ensure that those compromises are kept reasonable.

FtD is still in development heck. We here all understand that. However, you made your game public before finishing it. This means you need to deal with new players sooner, rather than later. This means attracting and holding on to new and casual players *now* and not later. A couple of those issues right now are the campaign and adventure modes. They're going to be the first stop for any new player. Right now, the new player will throw their hands up and give up very early on. Another major issue is one of identity. The game seems to trying to be both a real-time strategy and an action simulator at the same time, in addition to being a voxel building game. I honestly think you might be better off scrapping the RTS element and focusing on being an action simulator (in addition to the building elements. Leave those as they are). The AI is currently bone-dead stupid and the collision mechanics make the bad AI pathfinding that is typical of the RTS genre a no-win for the player. Having a RTS mode kept in there is fine, but you would have to tweak pathfinding and collision and LoD to allow for larger numbers of units to be present.

I would love to discuss game design theory with the devs. Feel free to PM or email me to discuss things in detail.
