I like that idea of the island, a colony of rambots Big Grin  but you would probably get to the point where you have some massive turrets that you can pull into a battle and just win resources in defending it

Yeah, in my little homebrew that is the starting point of the rebellion of the repressed serfs of Eriwick against the pirate lords. The River rat is an enlightened insurgent. Which is also why these are my starting vehicles Big Grin

The deepwater guard can be easily rebuffed with point defenses on several islands, yes. In fact, normal69 and I have both a tactic of using a maginot line of landbound and seafloor forts to farm the DWG Cool

Simply give the player an initial injection of resources and dial down the amount you can get from the starting resource zone after the initial buffer is depleted to the point where the longer you wait the worse the resource disparity between you and the AI becomes (after all, there must be a reason no-one else claimed the zone...).

Sure you can beat the DWG craft quite easily when it's 1v1 or even 2v1 with even a moderate amount of experience in ship building, but if their income is 5x what you can pull in they'll bury you under a mountain of destroyed vehicles eventually should you give them time to get up and rolling.

This sort of setup would favour those who immediately kick things off and move quickly to claim some of the stronger resource zones from the DWG, even as it technically gives inexperienced players a chance to build up and experiment in the campaign. Heck, it could even have a scripted event for those who wait too long and start losing ground to receive an offer of alliance from the OW, which while not ideal for players who look forward to farming them for resources would ensure that new players don't simply find themselves being completely overrun before they find their feet.

There really should be incentive to get turtles out of their shells.
The gantry that now sends out Falkenheims used to chuck Morays your way. Maybe make the initial gantry build a special fleet geared towards defence breaking, and have the other one send out stonger airships?

that's dangerous though, in several ways. I'm a pretty advanced user, but the game still needs to be manageable for newer players. Especially the deepwater guard, which is pretty much just an entry test.
You can still tweak the growth rate before starting a campaign of course.
Yeah, the DWG are always going to need to fall into a very narrow design space in terms of how they perform. Difficult enough to be fun for everyone, yet easy enough that new players don't simply die immediately.

That said even their Godly craft outside of the Plunderer and Crossbones can easily be handled by small ships that cost a fraction of their price if you are good at building small, with my personal answer to everything they toss out early on being a little 22K skimmer (originally designed with the intention of countering a surprise early Moray) letting you blitz the first resource zone within minutes of starting and begin snowballing hard. Any captures only accelerate this process, and I'm currently working on a breadboard flyer that's setup to simply circle above enemies as a distraction and to facilitate boarding efforts.

I might actually make a shot at a recorded blitz of the DWG tonight if I can get away from the new hearthstone expansion for a bit, just to see how quickly I can wipe them out in their current form with the updated designs. I know my previous best way back when took less than an hour, but that was when jets were ridiculously fast and you could literally fly the entire way to their final base without taking a scratch from their craft... Should be interesting to see what it takes these days Big Grin.

I've never really played around with fortifications either now that I think about it as I prefer a much more mobile setup with my forces and don't like pinning myself down unless required. That said, I can easily see how a heavy turret with LAMS support would be nigh on invulnerable vs the DWG and OW, and seafloor torpedo turrets could probably shred them as well without burning any resources at the moment... Though I'm assuming missiles or a big supercav gun are required to deal with the Eyrie and DWG airships?
