Yeah, in my little homebrew that is the starting point of the rebellion of the repressed serfs of Eriwick against the pirate lords. The River rat is an enlightened insurgent. Which is also why these are my starting vehicles Big Grin

The deepwater guard can be easily rebuffed with point defenses on several islands, yes. In fact, normal69 and I have both a tactic of using a maginot line of landbound and seafloor forts to farm the DWG Cool

Simply give the player an initial injection of resources and dial down the amount you can get from the starting resource zone after the initial buffer is depleted to the point where the longer you wait the worse the resource disparity between you and the AI becomes (after all, there must be a reason no-one else claimed the zone...).

Sure you can beat the DWG craft quite easily when it's 1v1 or even 2v1 with even a moderate amount of experience in ship building, but if their income is 5x what you can pull in they'll bury you under a mountain of destroyed vehicles eventually should you give them time to get up and rolling.


This sort of setup would favour those who immediately kick things off and move quickly to claim some of the stronger resource zones from the DWG, even as it technically gives inexperienced players a chance to build up and experiment in the campaign. Heck, it could even have a scripted event for those who wait too long and start losing ground to receive an offer of alliance from the OW, which while not ideal for players who look forward to farming them for resources would ensure that new players don't simply find themselves being completely overrun before they find their feet.

There really should be incentive to get turtles out of their shells.
The gantry that now sends out Falkenheims used to chuck Morays your way. Maybe make the initial gantry build a special fleet geared towards defence breaking, and have the other one send out stonger airships?

that's dangerous though, in several ways. I'm a pretty advanced user, but the game still needs to be manageable for newer players. Especially the deepwater guard, which is pretty much just an entry test.
You can still tweak the growth rate before starting a campaign of course.
