I prefer to mod in a village on the starting island that you must defend at all costs actually. And a few immediately inbound DWG waves like the days of old.

I think that putting no time (and therewith resource) pressure on the player might not be the best idea. Although I would like freeroaming exploring. I often just spawn in ships en route to sit on them and enjoy the journey. Quite immersive actually.

I like that idea of the island, a colony of rambots Big Grin but you would probably get to the point where you have some massive turrets that you can pull into a battle and just win resources in defending it

Yeah, I can see how both of those would be issues... But thankfully there's an easy solution to those!

Simply give the player an initial injection of resources and dial down the amount you can get from the starting resource zone after the initial buffer is depleted to the point where the longer you wait the worse the resource disparity between you and the AI becomes (after all, there must be a reason no-one else claimed the zone...).

Sure you can beat the DWG craft quite easily when it's 1v1 or even 2v1 with even a moderate amount of experience in ship building, but if their income is 5x what you can pull in they'll bury you under a mountain of destroyed vehicles eventually should you give them time to get up and rolling.


This sort of setup would favour those who immediately kick things off and move quickly to claim some of the stronger resource zones from the DWG, even as it technically gives inexperienced players a chance to build up and experiment in the campaign. Heck, it could even have a scripted event for those who wait too long and start losing ground to receive an offer of alliance from the OW, which while not ideal for players who look forward to farming them for resources would ensure that new players don't simply find themselves being completely overrun before they find their feet.
