Tank Wars Tournament Codex
Building rules
  • 1 team per player (collab entries allowed)
  • All team members must be on a spawn stick in a single blueprint (spawn stick does not count toward Materials limit)

Definition of a spawn stick

A spawn stick is a construct typically used in tournaments and is composed of a thin framework of blocks (typically wood) with subvehicle spawners positioned on them. It is used as a throwaway device to spawn in multiple constructs in a specific orientation and spacing while keeping them all on one blueprint. Spawn sticks use the absolute minimum blocks required to position their sub-vehicles and possess no AI, propulsion, weapons, or ammunition.

  • Any vehicle spawned off the front of the spawn stick may not be spawned more than 10 meters from it
  • Any vehicle spawned off the rear of the spawn stick may not be spawned more than 20 meters from it
  • 50,000 Materials limit
  • 15,000 maximum Materials per vehicle
  • 5 vehicles minimum per team
  • 12 vehicles maximum per team
  • Centralized resources will be used (10,000 Materials per team)
  • Repair bots are allowed, but repair tentacles are banned
  • Docking stations banned
  • Nukes banned
  • Shields banned
  • Warp drives banned
  • LUA banned
  • Ground vehices only
  • Spinblock abuse for compact builds is prohibted
  • Every vehicle must be capable of movement
  • Every vehicle must have wheels and use wheels only for any movement (jets may be used for downforce only)
  • Aimpoint Selection is allowed, so decoys are also allowed; just make sure that all ammo barrels on the vehicle are within 5 meters of its main hull (turrets do NOT count!)
  • Rams are allowed, but may not be placed on spinning spinblocks
  • Single and double-barreled APS only
  • CRAM cannons allowed, but may not be mounted on turrets.
  • CRAMs may be mounted on spinblocks, as long as the spinblocks only move once at the start of the match
  • Individual vehicles may only carry one type of cannon (CRAM or APS); it cannot have both
  • Each team may have up to 36 missile gantry blocks in it
  • Missiles may only use the One Turn, Laser Designator, and Laser Beam Rider Receiver guidance components

Missile Guidance Components

The missile guidance components are:
Infrared Detectors (both varieties)
Cameras
Sonar
Magnets
Laser Beam Rider Receivers
Laser Beam Designators
One Turn
Target Prediction Guidance
APN
Active Radar Seeker
LUA

Any other components in missiles are not considered guidance components and are unrestricted in this tournament, with the sole exception of EMP warheads.

  • Missiles which use the Laser Designator module must be launched horizontally
  • Laser designation blocks may only designate targets for their vehicle, NOT the entire team
  • No EMP allowed
  • We're here to fight enemy, not push them away like beech: Grav-rams banned
  • Lasers banned (including LAMS)

EXCEPTION: Laser Combiners may be used by themselves on turreted missile launchers to assist their aim. The combiner may not fire or have any other laser components attached to it.

  • PACs banned
  • If you're not sure whether or not something is cheaty, it probably is and you need to change it

Battle format
  • Tournament format will be single-fight matches in a double-elimination bracket
  • Teams will be spawned 800 meters apart, facing each other over flat terrain
  • Fights will last for 10 minutes or until one team is utterly destroyed
  • In the event of a time-out before either team is destroyed, %Team HP remaining calculated off Materials will be used to determine the winner; 1% difference is all that is required to win
  • If any vehicle voluntarily goes beyond 1000 meters from the nearest enemy for more than 60 seconds, it will be disqualified and its AI will be shut off for the remainder of the fight
  • Detection will be 70% automatic, so while detection equipment is not required, it is recommended as it can provide a significant boost to accuracy
  • We will be using the branch of the game that is live and stable 7 days prior to the deadline

Here's the world I'll be using. Go to Designer and select "Ground Combat," then head due north of your spawn point. It'll be the large, flat, sea-level island with green terrain on the map. It will actually appear sand-textured when you go to it in person, due to the way the game treats low-altitude terrain.

Submission format

When you submit your entry, please tell me:

1. Your name (I will call you by this name in the videos)
2. The name of the entry (this will be what I call it in the videos)
3. The name of each unique vehicle and how many there are of each in the team (again, I will name each of these in the videos)
4. The Material count for each individual vehicle

Submissions may be posted in this thread or emailed to: cx4ever@gmail.com.

Id like to join this, been like 2 years since i was in a tournament Smile

I understand if no one wants a Dev to join, but I assure you I wont win, probably wont make it past the first round. Fine if you dont want me to join.

Dude. For reals. It would be an honor to have you. Besides, sometimes you need to just kick back, relax, and enjoy what y'all have made so far.

...that's my opinion anyway. Blush

So, RE: spawn sticks, this may be a stupid question but how do I spawn vehicles off the back and have them facing the right way? The azimuth setting only goes up to 90. Unless it's fine to just have an origin block on the stick and make sure the vehicles are a set distance in front of or behind that. EDIT: also when it says they must be spawned so many metres in front or behind, does that mean that should be the distance to the closest point on the vehicle, the vehicle's center of mass, or the furthest point on the vehicle? I Imagine it would be the furthest point, to prevent a block of lead with a 900m long boom and a bunch of missiles on the end from getting rear armour shots right at the start.

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't we want a dev? I can't imagine it would be anything but an honour, and my experience with games with comunity involvement like this is that the devs are so busy developing that the players end up being better at the game anyway Tongue

Is there a limit on the number of guns we can use? Would having some monstrous number of guns facing in all directions be allowed?

Also can we get an exception for rams and CRAMs on spinblocks if the spinblock is only being used to angle a part? Having a CRAM cannon coming out of something diagonally would be helpful for one of my ideas, but it would only work as a fixed CRAM, just at an angle.

The idea of tournament has dwelled for long in my mind. But the only one i've seen is a filmed one Panzer Vor.

This seems to be different from PzV.

Is this PvP? Or AIvAI?? May a man driven tank without land AI participate?

Good distance, but isn't it a bit short? A 264mm SPG i've been testing hits easy from 1500m. A little higher distance would allow to profit from lower caliber higher precision/lower tank profile. In other words more builds.

I could sound weird, but why not create an arena made of terrain to create a limit? Or a HeavyArmorBeam limitation of any kind? Like some beams concidered as buildings that tell where the fighting space/ring ends?

Multibarrels (more that x2) because the price for using such system is not reflected in FtD and the way they work look like an exploit. But except this personnal impression, why are they banned?

Never been in any tournaments in FtD. I think i'm understanding something enough about FtD to participate =)

@Mr. Yar the tournaments are almost always AI v AI, and this is no exception. You submit your designs to the host and they spawn them in in the designer on their computer.

15k materials is the vehicle max price

10k materials is how much the teams get each, shared between vehicles as the entrant prefers

800 metres is double what was previously planned for the engagement range, and IMO any further means that there's no reason not to use sabot-spam tanks as anything low velocity or low ROF will never hit.

FtD AI is currently too derpy to deal with obstacles properly, so an infinite flat plain will probably be better.

Multibarrels are banned to balance the fact that shields are banned: shields are the only thing that counter high-velocity sabot spam, and without shields in the tourney, we need a limit on the sabot spam to give other design options a fighting chance. Else everyone will just build a bunch of stationary cannons of doom with heavy frontal armour and the guy who wins is the guy who wears down the other guy's armour first. Kinda boring IMO.

Please do join! I can tell you're new, so don't be disappointed if you lose, but building within limits like this is always fun and challenging, and it's cool to see your things battling other things Big Grin

Some people "may" think i know some secret knowledge that would lead me to win, or be given preferential treatment or something.
I kinda doubt anyone actually would think that, but I dont want to just presume there is no issue so i figure id ask first.

Players better at the game, yeah many are better at me at designing deadly things. Ive spent all this time building faction stuff and im not used to dealing with min/maxing or cheese.

Thank you for this informative answer =)

The process itself of participating is enough for me. Win/Loose is secondary.

Boring for sure.
But the vehicule you describe seems(impression) buildable with this rules anyway. It may not be a weapon of doom for 15k tho.

From my humble experience:
A medium caliber(160-330), high velocity, SPG using sabbot/various composite firing at 60rpm or more would probably cut through most armor at 800M. Add 6x6 support missiles, armor or mobility for durability...

PS: First thing that came to my mind, was using sabbot rounds for tournament... I almost never use them in campain. Even AIR units mostly use missiles/various HE lol. But for destroying a simple, single vehicule - seems to be one of the most logical choice. Maybe ban sabbots? lol

About the APS 1 or 2 barrel thing.
I assume this is 1 or 2 barrels per Firing piece?

I can have 1 Turret with 2 separate cannons each with 2 barrels for a total of 4 barrels on a turret for example?
